Want to Get Fit? You Just Need to Start!

Have you ever stopped yourself from doing something because you weren’t sure if you could do it? You worried about doing things a certain way, or having things look a certain way, so you just didn’t bother to do it all. When you start something, you want to know that everything will run smoothly and it will be easy—right?

I first heard this important tip in the context of running a business, but it is equally applicable to making changes to your lifestyle. Are you ready? Here it is:

You don’t need to be perfect; you just need to start.

Nothing is perfect for everyone but there are constants!

There’s nothing that is perfect for everyone, but there are some constants that apply to everyone. And that’s one of them. If you simply make a start toward whatever it is you want to achieve, you’re already making progress.

Our bodies have constants, too. They need protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, water, fibre and phytonutrients. And they need exercise. How you put all of that together into a fitness plan can be different than how your neighbour or co-worker does it; as long as it works for you. And, it can change to suit your needs as your lifestyle changes. What it can’t do, is work for you if you don’t start.

Pointers to help you put it together

So, how do you put everything together and work through all the hype to figure out what will work for you? Here are seven pointers to help guide you:

  1. There is no quick fix. Remember that seeing results will take time, so pick something you can stick with and don’t quit when you think it isn’t working.
  1. Everything you do in your life will contribute to your health and wellness. It isn’t just about adding exercise or just about getting extra vitamins. You need to consider the big picture.
  1. Improving your nutrition alone won’t help you gain and maintain muscle—and you need healthy muscles to help your body move properly. You still need to exert and use your muscles.
  1. Eating one or two types of vegetables is a good start, but your body needs more than that to function properly.
  1. Adding exercise is great, but if you don’t get the proper nutrients, your body won’t have the energy to build muscle and produce hormones, which in turn control other body functions (eating, sleeping, etc.)
  1. When considering the big picture, you need to pay attention to how well and how long you sleep, and how you handle stress.
  1. If you are missing any of the components, you won’t be able to reach or maintain your health and fitness goals for the long term.


Weightloss diets are more alike than you think!

But what about diets, you ask? There are so many different ones out there, but you may be surprised to know that they are more alike than they are different. They all raise awareness about nutrition and make you pay attention to what you’re eating. Research shows that by simply paying closer attention to what you eat, you’ll lose fat and improve your overall health. Whether it’s avoiding carbs, eating more veggies, seeking out organic foods, or avoiding animal-based foods, paying attention to what you’re eating in the first place is an important step in the process. Diets also do a few other things:

  • Focus on food quality. For example, paleo or low-carb diets promote eating more natural, free-range, animal-based foods that are high in protein, high in fat and minimally processed. Vegan diets promote the consumption of more natural, plant-based foods that are high in fibre and antioxidants, and are minimally processed. All diets will tell you to eat whole, minimally processed foods that are nutrient-dense, but none will tell you to eat more processed, chemical-based foods.
  • Eliminate nutrient deficiencies. Following any diet will address nutrient deficiencies, because whole foods have all of their nutrients still intact. Processed foods, on the other hand, have been stripped of their nutrients in order for them to last longer on store shelves and in our cupboards. A properly designed diet of any kind will eliminate some of the most common deficiencies (water, certain vitamins and minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids). We feel terrible and don’t perform our best when we are deficient in something; addressing deficiencies will have you feeling rejuvenated and energetic.
  • Control appetite and food intake. Diets cause us to be more aware of what we are eating. Choosing higher quality, more satisfying foods will result in the consumption of less food and eliminate binge eating or cravings caused by deficiencies, and lack of feeling satiated after meals. Eating less results in weight loss.
  • Promote regular exercise. All diet plans indicate that you also need to exercise. It doesn’t need to be complicated; simply get moving and create a routine. Regular exercise with a mix of high- and low-intensity activity can dramatically improve your body’s ability to efficiently process the food you eat (whatever foods those are).

Consistency is key!

Whichever ‘diet’ you choose, the key is consistency. If you aren’t consistent and don’t stick with it, you won’t have success.

Whether Paleo or Atkins, a vegan diet, a tight grocery budget, or a desire to eat only organic, free range and artisan foods—they can all help you achieve your goals, and I can help you plan it, implement it and stick with it.

I listen to your needs and consider your lifestyle and the goals you want to accomplish to create the right dietary approach for you; one that is specific to what you want to achieve and fits with your day-to-day living. It’s not as simple as “avoid meat” or “eat like a caveman,” but it’s a rational and lasting approach that actually works long-term. If you only address one aspect of your fitness, or go through a gruelling bootcamp to lose a few pounds, you’ll only put those pounds back on later. You’ll be more frustrated that you fell for the empty promises of a quick-fix, instead of creating a lasting solution.
