This time of year is so invigorating for me. Some people like the autumn when the temperatures start cooling down from the summer heat; I love spring because the days are getting longer, the snow is starting to melt as the days slowly get warmer. What a wonderful time to enjoy the sunshine, birds chirping, and flowers blooming. I thought I would share some reasons why you can make an excuse to change some of your daily routines to include some time spent outdoors.

1.  Soaking in the sun’s rays can help those winter blues. It’s been a long cold winter with lots of snow, and now that we have plenty of sunshine we should be taking some time to make sure we get out doors. Between the sunshine and a good brisk walk you have a medication-free way to treat depression!

[two_third last=”no” class=”” id=””]2.  Kids and even animals can get cabin fever from being cooped up all winter.  With the temperatures dropping so low so many times, my poor Lab wasn’t able to get out as often as she would’ve liked. Making sure you get them outside will burn some pent-up energy and help them sleep better later too.

3.  With the warmer weather it’s a perfect time to take your workouts outside! Stay cool doing your workout while enjoying the fresh air for a minimum of 20 minutes a day. 4.  It helps with pain. Sunlight has hormone regulating properties that can reduce your pain. Spend time outside!” Studies have also shown that ultraviolet radiation from the sun releases the feel-good hormone endorphin, which helps with pain relief.

5.  Is your internal clock just a little off with the time change and the days getting longer? Spending time outside in daylight, especially in the early morning and evening helps you reset the internal clock. Our clocks are set by the sunlight and melatonin, the body’s natural sleep hormone.

[two_third last=”no” class=”” id=””]6.  Our bodies create vitamin D by being outside in the sun. Vitamin D plays an important role in various systems of the body including our skin and immunity. Moderation is the key. Just be aware of the UV index for your area so as not to get sun burned.

7.  Going for walks has a positive physical effect on our bodies and it also has a positive effect on our emotional state. Walking in the fresh air helps relieve stress.
