Do You have the Luck of the Irish?

[ut_two_thirds] It’s already March – springtime and St. Patrick’s Day are just around the corner. Soon everywhere you look,  the world will fill with folks wearing green t-shirts, hats, and buttons that celebrate their good fortune to be ‘Irish.’  The association of being “Irish” and charmed with good luck is evident in the common expression ‘luck of the Irish.’ According to Edward T. O’Donnell, author of 1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History, the phrase “luck of the Irish” started in America, “During the gold and silver rush  in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish American birth. . . .Over time this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression ‘luck of the Irish.’” [/ut_two_thirds] [ut_one_third_last]


Although definitions of luck might vary, the word often comes into play to explain something that happened beyond ones control or defying the odds.

I prefer to love the idea of St. Patties Day, Luck of the Irish is being able to defy the odds as it is something to be proud of and people achieving their goals by showing sheer determination. There are so many stories of people overcoming overwhelming odds for one thing or another but I will promise you it has nothing to do with luck. It happens because someone has decided they were going to accomplish a goal they’ve set for themselves and refused to let anything get in the way of achieving it.

Getting fit or reaching your goals has nothing to do with Luck. It takes planning, perseverance, and a positive attitude.

  • You need to prepared to have enough of the right foods on a day to day basis so you aren’t tempted to go back to old habits.
  • Make sure you are getting enough sleep and you are rested enough to be able to accomplish the tasks at hand and it keeps your system in rhythm.
  • You need to plan your day to incorporate different ways of participating in physical activity each day
  • Plan around you weaknesses. You know what they are. Figure out how you can work around them to overcome them.
  • If you don’t have the knowledge, seek it out. Why waste your time on trial and error only to run the risk of giving up. There are professionals that will help you reach your goals in a fraction of the time because that is what they are trained to do. [/ut_two_thirds_last]


  • In the beginning, most things we take on are easy; people like to look for to a pleasant diversion or something out of the ordinary of their daily routines. When you begin to struggle, some will want to give up and return to their old habits rather than have the perseverance to sticking to your goals when you initially forget the reason why you starting in the first place.
  • Stop giving yourself reasons. People who defy odds don`t make excuses for why they shouldn`t, on the contrary, they always keep an eye on the goal and strive for it everyday.
  • Forming habits takes the forethought out of the equation. Do things at a set time or part of a sequence to make sure you are always prepared.
  • Track your progress. If you don`t know where you`ve been how do you know how to get to where you are going. Always give just a little more than the last time. Switch it up to keep it interesting and the body guessing.


Positive Attitude

  • Keep each day in perspective. Didn`t reach your fitness goals today? Move on. Tomorrow is another day to make smarter decisions. When you wake up, re-dedicate yourself to your goals without beating yourself about whatever mistakes you made in the past. After all, you can’t change what you did yesterday. All you can learn from it, plan ahead, and start again!
  • Having a goal and a reason to reach that goal is sometimes all someone needs to keep taking those steps forward.
  • You will have decided you are worth putting your basic needs in front of others` and you are true to yourself every day.[/ut_two_thirds] [ut_one_third_last] four-leaf-clover2[/ut_one_third_last]


As far as I’m concerned, the hardest work is the Perseverance.  Once you`ve planned ahead a little, you know that when you go to the fridge there is going to be something to eat; if you`ve planned ahead you know what days you will have time for some physical activity and you make sure you complete it before doing anything else. When you see the results, you feel better about why you are doing the things you`re doing.
