What sort of stories to you tell yourself?

Our mind is so powerful that it will do whatever we tell it to. Really, it will. So what sort of things are we telling it? Are we victims of circumstance and just dealing with everything life throws at us or are survivors conquering everything in our paths learning as we go through life?

When we tell ourselves things like ‘I will take a break when I get this done’, ‘I don’t have time for that’, ‘I don’t deserve to pamper myself with a manicure’, ‘exercise is a chore’, ‘exercise isn’t important’, ‘I will exercise tomorrow’, or how about ‘I can do what a personal trainer will do’.

These messages are negative and they are devaluing, but how often do we say these sorts of things to ourselves to justify a choice or decision we’ve made to put something off? I am guilty of it at times and as much as I try hard not to let it happen, it still does.

The good news is that changing how we treat ourselves can have a positive impact on how we think and how we talk to ourselves. Both body and soul need time to recoup and to recover. Your body needs to heal and your soul needs to reflect and put things in perspective. Below are 5 ways you can start putting yourself first so you can be the best person to yourself and to others.

Tips to start putting you first

[ut_two_thirds] Take a Break. What do you like to do? Read a book? Go to the movies? Get a manicure? Soak in the tub? Taking time out of your busy schedule to do something for you may just give you the time you need to be able to remember things and process all sorts of information. Your thoughts will be better organized when it they are spaced over time rather than trying to cram more work into your busy day. [ut_one_third] appointment-scheduler[/ut_one_third] [ut_two_thirds_last]Make a date with yourself. Schedule the time if you have to. Book yourself a manicure or pedicure. You are able to stop because you just can’t do anything else and you will need to wait until your nails are dry so as not to waste the money on the service, right? Think of it as investing your time and money so you can later think more clearly without stress playing a role in the decision process. Invest your time in the most strategic ways to gain the most return. [/ut_two_thirds_last]

[ut_two_thirds] Make time for exercise. I love going into my workout room and turning the music up loud and rocking it out while doing my workout. I get upset and feel like I’m cheating myself if I don’t make time for ME to do that. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins and you will have more energy. You will be more confident because you will know that you can accomplish what you put your mind to. If you reach a goal you’ve set for yourself you will feel empowered. I always have a goal to strive for, that way I know when I’ve reached it. If you don’t have a goal, how do you know where you are going? [ut_one_third] sleeping[/ut_one_third] [ut_two_thirds_last] Go to bed early. In case you need an excuse to get more sleep, your body needs slow wave sleep for renewal and repair of the body and during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) is when your brain dreams and reorganizes information it’s learned in the day. Some people think they can function with less than 8 hours sleep a night. That may be true for a day or two but beyond that, whether you realize it or not, your reaction time and performance decreases with each night you don’t get enough sleep. It’s a cumulative effect. [/ut_two_thirds_last]

Without the slow wave sleep and REM sleep phases, the body literally starts to die. If you starve yourself of sleep, you can’t recover physically, your immune system weakens, and your brain becomes foggy. Or, as the researchers put it, sleep deprived individuals experience increased risk of viral infections, weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, mental illness, and mortality.

To summarize: slow wave sleep helps you recover physically while REM sleep helps you recover mentally. The amount of time you spend in these phases tends to decrease with age, which means the quality of your sleep and your body’s ability to recover also decrease with age. (

Treat your self like royalty,

Learn to put yourself first!

We are only one person and we can only do so much at a time. If we want to be happy and gain a little harmony (because there isn’t such a thing as balance) in our lives we must put ourselves first and take care of ourselves. We need to make sure we take a break, make some ‘ME’ time, exercise to stay physically fit, and sleep to let our bodies and our minds recover from the day’s events.

I’ve learn that if something is important to you, you will prioritize it. The only person you truly need to justify anything to is you. When you take care of yourself first you are able do the better job while at work and you are able to take better care of others outside of work. It’s OK to admit you don’t know how to do something. If you haven’t had the success you were looking for by doing something on your own, it’s OK to ask for help. Invest in yourself because no one else will.

The first step must begin with you!

If you’re ready to start looking and feeling better while putting yourself first, I’m here to help.

I have programs that will help you to put yourself first and focus on yourself. There’s different levels of accountability; choose the program based on your needs and to your lifestyle!
