Abs Are Made In the Kitchen

Most people think abs are made on the floor by performing countless sit-ups. While doing all that crunching and squeezing are good exercises that create a strong and thick rectus abdominis muscle, it’s impossible to have that coveted six-pack, flat-tummy result if you’re carrying too much body fat.

There are two steps to getting those great abs, and while you do need to do exercises that strengthen and build all of the muscles in your abdominal area, you also need to lose the layer of fat that covers those muscles.

Start In the Kitchen:

As always, it’s important to drink a lot of water. This performs two key things for the body: It flushes the system and maintains vital hydration. In addition, it’s important to eat clean, whole foods such as fruits and vegetables along with healthy fats. Avocado, olive and coconut oils and healthy nuts are members of the healthy fats family. By giving your body the proper nutrients it needs to produce energy and perform efficiently will also keep you feeling full longer while you go about your daily routine. Not only will your body be feeling and functioning better, but you’ll also have more energy. If you eat and/or drink processed foods and simple carbohydrates, you’ll feel tired, sluggish and hungry, but will be slowly and consistently adding inches to your frame.

Build With Exercise:

While making sure you stay active and do enough cardio to keep your heart and body performing efficiently, there are a variety of exercises that will help build and strengthen your abs and core. These include:

  • cable crunches
  • hanging leg raises (you can add some weight to these when you can easily complete more than 20 reps)
  • Russian twists
  • dead bug
  • v-ups (known in Pilates as ‘the Teaser’)
  • planks and side planks
  • ab wheel exercises

It’s not easy, and getting those tight, toned abs will take some perseverance, but it is possible. While you’re working toward your fitness goals, always make sure to get enough rest and make sure you give your body and mind time to recover and rejuvenate.
