Let me be Frank

Last week I talked about setting up goals and your New Year’s resolutions. This week I thought I would get a little more serious and talk about some of the reasons I changed my lifestyle.

People rarely decide to make life-long changes unless something happens that makes them stop and at take a closer look at where they are and where they want to be in the future. Ebenezer Scrooge had the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future to show him the path he was on wasn’t how it has to be and could still be changed.

I had reached a place in my life where I had to make a choice: Was I going to live my life in a chair so sick and filled with disease that I would be confined to my home and not able to enjoy what life has to offer? Or was I going to be vibrant, energetic, and full of life? I wanted to be able to walk down the 100 stairs to reach the beach at my favourite summer place.

What Will Get Your Attention?

Have you run into an old friend at a reunion or party and they looked great? They appeared to have an abundance of energy and they seemed to glow; there were no extra pounds and they seemed so happy? I bet you wondered what their secret is.

Maybe you’ve seen someone and you can’t believe how run down they seemed? What happened to them? They were always able to eat whatever they wanted and didn’t gain a pound. Maybe they are now overweight, looking tired and telling you how life has thrown them a curve ball. That they are now sick with diabetes, or they’ve been diagnosed with heart disease or some other sickness that they need to be careful and not exert themselves.

I have talked to so many people who tell me that they aren’t ready to give up their foods like burgers and fries, chips, chocolate bars etc. They go on to refuse to eat fruits and vegetables because they don’t like them.

I need to ask you this… If you knew you could treat diseases like Diabetes, Heart Disease, Cancer, Obesity, Asthma, etc. by changing your diet and exercising, would you?

If the answer is ‘No,’ why not?

If the answer is ‘Yes,’ that’s wonderful. When will you start?

Waking Up with Eyes Wide Open

I realized a few years ago when I had my car accident that we are very mortal. We will grow old; we will get weaker if we don’t pay attention; what we do to our bodies matter. It’s up to us what quality of life we choose to have. About seven years ago I was told I was one step away from having cancer (I had surgery and what I had was removed). At that time I was told that it was not a matter of ‘if’ it would come back, but rather a matter of ‘when,’ if I did not change my habits.

What opened my eyes was seeing my father-in-law get sick and 6 months later pass away from cancer, and then a year later my stepfather passing away 3 months from the day of discovering his cancer. This sort of thing is happening all the time. So many people I know have lost someone they loved to one disease or another, taken from them so early in their lives.

It was after these circumstances that I decided I needed to make some changes. My husband was going to make those changes too. I wanted to make sure he was not going to be taken from me too early. I chose to educate myself and I started making healthy choices and exercising regularly. I figured if my grandparents could make it the ripe old age of 91, they had to be doing something right. They went for daily walks; they ate healthy most of the time. They still had treats on special occasions but they didn’t waste their money on such things on a daily basis, because then it wouldn’t be a treat. Following in their footsteps, we don’t miss out on life. We still have fun, we still have chips once in a while, and if we want some ice cream or cake we can still eat it. We just choose to eat healthy and exercise on a daily basis so when we do indulge once in a while it’s okay.

What Are Your Reasons?

Each person will have their own reasons why they choose to change. Those were mine.
